We Love Aperol Spritz

In honour of London Cocktail Week, we’re celebrating one of the most wonderful Italian traditions, the Aperol Spritz.

Here at Rossopomodoro, we’re celebrating London Cocktail Week by offering two for one on all of our cocktails, we know, we’re too kind. Why not take the opportunity to discover one of Italy’s most famous exports, Aperol Spritz?

Over the last couple of years, this ‘mysterious orange drink’ (as it has been called) has enjoyed a surge of popularity in London and beyond. Though a relative newcomer to the UK, the Aperol Spritz has a long and noble history, dating back to the 19th century.

It was during the Habsburg rule of the Republic of Venice that the Spritz story began. The occupying soldiers and merchants, more used to drinking much lighter beer, would add a spritz (splash) of soda to their white wine. This quickly caught on and saw the local Venetians conjuring up new versions of the drink.

When Aperol itself was invented by the Barbieri brothers (God bless them) in 1919, it turned out this bittersweet, citrusy, herby liquor was the missing ingredient to the Spritz. Aperol Spritz was born! Having become the thing to drink in stylish Venice, Aperol Spritz soon became the cocktail of choice across Italy.

Perfect as an late afternoon drink, or to accompany your bruschetta in that wonderfully civilised Italian tradition of aperitivo. To those unfamiliar with aperitivo, this is the perfect antidote to our British binge tendencies. Rather than consuming endless pints of beer on an empty stomach after work of a Friday night, our friends on the continent will slowly sip spritzes, soaking them up with a spread of finger food at the bar.

The Aperol Spritz we know and love today is 3 parts Prosecco, 2 parts Aperol and a dash of soda, so why not try making your own at home? Or even better, head on over to your nearest Rossopomodoro and order a spritz and bruschetta for a truly authentic experience!

And did we mention, specially for London Cocktail Week, it’s two for one on all our cocktails! Just mention this offer when you order.

Ciao, Abbie!
